Eating Out With Kids

Pizza restaurant

We all eat out with our kids from time to time, and it’s very easy to swing by the fast food drive-thru window and order the same old thing without giving it much thought.

However, restaurant food – especially fast food – can contain a lot of extra hidden calories, fat, sugar, and salt, and portion sizes are notoriously large. But if you know what to look for, there are plenty of healthier options to choose from on restaurant menus.

Here are just a few simple strategies to use when taking kids out to eat:

Mom and kids at ice cream shop
  • Look past the kids’ menu, which often contains mostly fried, high-fat entrees
  • Don’t super size orders at fast food restaurants
  • Order water to drink – it’s a great money saving strategy, too
  • If you must order a soda, then order the smallest size – don’t give in to the offer to order a larger drink for just a little more money
  • Order 100% juice instead of a soda – then mix it with water and split it between two family members!
  • Order a salad, plain baked potato, or fruit instead of fries
  • Split an order of fries or chicken nuggets with another family member
  • Order lettuce and tomato on your sandwich
